Now, a bold new initiative aims to strengthen that balance.<img src="https://api.ecff.org.et/images/d2517485-5cff-4d33-a03d-17e37c9c8ddd.jpg">The LaunchThe Environment and Coffee Forest Forum (ECFF) has announced the official launch of Ecosystem-based Solutions for Biodiversity Conservation and Resilient Livelihoods, a comprehensive conservation and development project spanning the Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve in Ethiopia's Oromia region.Developed in partnership with Farm Africa and Jersey Overseas Aid, the initiative will directly reach 168,000 households representing one of the largest integrated conservation efforts in the region.The ChallengeThe Yayu Coffee Forest faces mounting pressures. Climate change threatens agricultural productivity. Population growth strains forest resources. Farmers struggle with declining yields and environmental degradation. Wildlife habitats shrink. Ecosystem services deteriorate.These interconnected challenges require integrated solutions.<img src="https://api.ecff.org.et/images/2b520c45-309a-497f-a493-000a7e03d589.jpg">The SolutionRather than viewing conservation and development as competing priorities, the new initiative treats them as complementary goals. Ecosystem Conservation The initiative prioritizes the conservation and sustainable management of the forests, wetlands, and wildlife that form the ecological foundation of the Yayu Coffee Forest. Through community-based forest management, habitat restoration, and wildlife protection, the project will preserve biodiversity for future generations.2. Agricultural Sustainability Recognizing that farming communities are both stewards and stakeholders in ecosystem health, the project will support sustainable agricultural practices that protect landscape productivity while conserving natural resources.3. Livelihood Strengthening The project is designed to strengthen the livelihoods and resilience of smallholder farmers and forest-dependent communities. By linking conservation efforts to improved incomes and reduced vulnerability to climate impacts, the initiative ensures that environmental protection creates tangible community benefits.Why This MattersThe Yayu Coffee Forest is not merely a local resource—it is a global biodiversity hotspot and a critical ecosystem for East Africa.
